The game is set in a dark fantasy style. The player is tasked with venturing alone into the dungeons of the city of Tristram, overrun by various demons, undead, and other evil creatures. Progressing deeper and deeper through the dungeon's 16 levels, the player eventually reaches Hell, where they must find and kill Diablo, the game's main boss.
