Dungeon levels | Diablo 1: Hellfire

Diablo 1 Walkthrough -> Dungeon Levels

Church cellars (levels 1-4)

The church basements are the first four levels. The monsters on these levels are the weakest. I recommend clearing all levels, as it's crucial to maximize your experience and collect money/items there. Skeletons also drop the most money.

You'll also encounter some serious enemies on these levels—the Butcher and the Skeleton King. I recommend skipping them initially and returning to them only when you've cleared levels 5-6 of the catacombs without issue. Otherwise, they'll be very difficult or even impossible to defeat. Important! Save before each boss in case you die.

Catacombs  (levels 5-8)

The catacombs are no longer for children. Monks once stored barrels of wine here, until terrifying monsters began crawling out of the caves. The catacombs occupy levels 5-8 of the dungeons. The atmosphere here is even more gloomy, the corners are darker, and the inhabitants are more vicious.

The enemies here are fast and resilient, and they also reward more experience. It's pretty clear—the deeper you go, the more difficult it gets. Be careful, use the doors to kill monsters one by one, and look for magic that can defeat masses of enemies. Remember, if you're stuck, you can save your game, exit to the menu, and when you load, select "New Game" and clear levels 1-4 of the church dungeon again.

But all your efforts will be well rewarded—there's more gold here, and the items you find aren't just old rags, but decent armor and weapons. You might even get lucky and find a good magic item.

Caves (9-12 levels)

Lava and rocks are a sign that you've descended to the caves; they occupy levels 9-12. The monsters here are significantly larger and naturally stronger.

A good spot for archers and mages—numerous streams of magma allow you to kill many monsters from a distance while they're still trying to figure out how to get to you. That is, of course, unless you encounter Magma Demons, who have a powerful ranged attack. And the Spitting Ones are also a pain, as their spit leaves behind poisonous puddles, which you can stand in to see your health drain away.

Hell (levels 13-16)

So, you've descended into hell. Welcome to Diablo's realm. There are no narrow passages or doors here, and nowhere to hide. The monsters here are dangerous and cunning, and there's no place for the weak. Knights in dark armor are the best warriors of the devil. They'll prove it to you time and time again, just let them surround you.

Succubi, though they look inviting, are a real nuisance to anyone who comes into contact with them. The mages will direct fire and electricity at you, and if you approach, they'll teleport away. It's very annoying.

And of course, Diablo... if you're lucky and get to him, he'll give you hell. It's worth noting that while Diablo hits very hard and can be quite knockback-heavy, the fight is fairly quick.
