Chapter 4: Diamond City
Follow the quest marker to Diamond City, and you'll see a woman being denied entry to the city. The situation prompts her to use you to trick security into giving her the pass she wants. She'll then immediately engage in an argument with Mayor McDonough. When you join the conversation, it doesn't matter which side you support. If your charisma is high enough to get the mayor to reveal more information, he'll mention Nick Valentine as someone who can help. Piper will ask you to stop by her newspaper office later, potentially triggering the quest "Story of the Century."
Speak with Danny Sullivan at the counter near the gate and try to convince him you're really a merchant (difficult) to receive 50 caps for free.

Now that you've reached Diamond City's bustling market, you can stock up on all sorts of gear and services unavailable elsewhere. To purchase legendary weapons, visit Arturo at Commonwealth Arms. For common weapons, the best and cheapest examples are sold by Percy the Robot, located in Myrna's house. He has a wide selection of powerful weapons for 200-400 caps. Alternatively, visit Cricket, the weapons dealer outside the city gates, for powerful weapons like the Rocket Launcher, Laser Sniper Rifle, Automatic Combat Shotgun, and more. To pick up some side effects, talk to:
1. Moe Cronin, at the Flyswatter on the north side of the market square, for the quest "In Left Field."
2. Go to the back alley north of the Flyswatter and approach the welder to receive the quest "Road to Freedom."
3. The abbot painting the field wall offers the quest "Painting the City."
4. Talk to Travis Miles in Diamond City Radio, then wait for the city guard to tell you that Vadim Bobrov wants to speak with you. Talk to Vadim in the Dugout Inn to receive the quest "The Con Artist."
Several different unnamed quests are also available by talking to townspeople. You can go north to the field wall and sit down to hear Mayor McDonagh denounce Piper's article again. He's sure to have a problem with that. Now talk to Piper at her newspaper office, "Publick Occurrences," on the south side of the market. She'll offer to join you as a companion if you agree to a short interview. If you accept, you'll answer a few questions about your experiences in the Commonwealth (which won't affect the quest), complete the "History of the Century" quest, and Piper can join you! Talk to her again, ask her to join, and then you can choose where to send Dogmeat. Any towns you're friendly with are potential locations.
Now search the top floor of the office:
- Lockpick box
- 10mm ammo x32, 5.56mm ammo x12, 5mm ammo x15
- Stimpak x2
Nick Valentine, Private Detective
It's hard to miss Nick Valentine's Detective Agency, located north of Diamond City Market. Inside, you'll find Ellie Perkins, an office worker and part-time secretary. Persuade her with the "It's important" tactic for extra XP, but she'll still tell you that Nick is missing. Luckily, Ellie knows where to find him. Offer to help, and you'll complete the quest "The Jewel of the Commonwealth" and begin the mission "Unlucky Valentine." Pick up the Robco Fun from Nick's desk to receive a holodisk with the game "Zeta Invaders."
Nick is located at the Park Street station in Boston Common, approximately 2-3 km northeast of Diamond City. Upon arriving at Boston Common, look for the small rectangular elevated structure marking the entrance.
Take the escalator inside and listen in on the gangsters' conversation about the detective, or simply sneak in. Search the area, but be careful of the trap in the women's bathroom:
- .45 ammo x11, 10mm ammo x24.
Move southeast, then down the stairs:
The next fight can be very easy for snipers. Just calm the gangster near the bottom of the stairs and retreat back when necessary. After all the baddies are dead, go to the northwest side, and then hack the door (novice) in the northeast. At the end of the hall is a tripwire to defuse, then some .50 caliber ammo and an expert safe:
- Mentats, Rad-Away, Stimpak
- Fragmentation Mine, Plasma Grenade
Head northeast down the tunnels, grabbing the Nuka-Cola Quantum at the end, on the right. The left side tunnel continues and leads to the area where Nick is being held.
After defeating the gangsters, you approach the quest marker and find... a safehouse door! Looks like it won't be easy to find. Open the safehouse door and go into the reception area to find your first victim, who reacts to the sound of the door opening.
Then, head northeast into the open room and take out the next thug. Proceed through the rooms, down the stairs. You'll soon hear a couple more gangsters talking. After going down to the locker room, take them out through the door in the southeast. Continue following the quest marker. Enter the sliding door to find a huge open room. Getting ahead will be difficult due to the light until you kill the gangster walking around...
Slowly but surely, make your way to the brightly lit area and kill another patrolling gangster, climbing up and dropping down... On the catwalk, look northeast and attack the next pair of gangsters. When you come to a dead end with an open pit in the floor, you'll probably want to kill the gangsters (2 of them) two floors below. Why not?
Go down, grab the Lock Pick Box from the table, and use the Vault-Tec terminal to learn a little about the history of Vault 114. Open the next door and follow the linear path until you open a second closed door.
Open the door and kill Dino from a distance. Run up to the dead Dino, and you'll hear Nick Valentine on the other side of the door. Find the Vault Overseer's password from Dino, then use the computer terminal to open the door. Go inside and talk to Nick Valentin, who's not as big as you might expect. Grab the "Speech" bobblehead on the table before you go ("All merchants receive +100 caps for bartering").
Now follow Nick to the exit, killing the gangsters along the way, always letting Nick lead the way. When you reach the vault exit, Skinny Malone and three thugs will be waiting for you. Only a very high Charisma will help you avoid the fight. When the shooting starts, turn around and hide in the small room to the northwest, even though it's a dead end. The gang should stick to the main room when you pop out, patiently killing them with Nick's help. Search the bodies for items, then follow the quest marker for an easy exit. There, talk to Nick to complete "Unlucky Valentine" and begin "Revelation."
Detective work
Return to Nick Valentine's Detective Agency in Diamond City and sit down at his desk to discuss his missing son. Based on the description, Nick believes a mercenary named Kellogg could be the one who shot our wife and helped take Sean. The problem is, he's working for someone unknown. Nick suggests heading to Kellogg's house in the west of Diamond City. Before leaving the agency, grab the two cases found around the quests "The Vanishing Law" and "The Gilded Grasshopper."
Now leave the agency and follow Nick to Kellogg's house. He can't open the master lock on the door and asks for your help. There are several ways to get into the house; the easiest is to pick the lock, if you're up to it. Otherwise, head to the mayor's office above the main gate and try to use charisma to coerce his secretary into giving you the key. If that fails, the key can be found in the secretary's desk. Pick the lock and take it when you can.
Once you get to Kellogg's house, Nick will mention that the place seems a bit small. Look for the secret button; you'll find it under the table. Head to the hidden room and grab one of the San Francisco Sunlights cigars from the end of the table. Dogmeat will be able to smell it and track its owner. Before you head out, loot Kellogg's provisions:
- Nuka Cola Quantum x2, Nuka Cherry x2, Orange Mentats, Purified Water x4, Stimpak x2
- Plasma Charge x16, 5mm Ammo x44, Fusion Batteries x46, .38 Ammo x9
- Iguana Soup, Iguana Balls
- Fragmentation Mine
Dogmeat will be waiting for you outside. Show him the cigar and off you go! It's best to have a short- and medium-range weapon designed for accompanying the dog, as there will be close-range attacks in its path. When Dogmeat stops in front of a table and chair outside the city, take another cigar and show it to him again. He'll then stop on the highway. Search the nearby bodies, grab the bloody rag by the door, and show it to Dogmeat.
Shortly after continuing along the highway, you'll be ambushed by several wild dogs. Afterward, the attack becomes a bit more difficult with five stronger dogs. Next, Dogmeat will stop on a chair with an ashtray and a beer bottle nearby. Take the bottle to continue. The next ambush will be: Wild Ghoul Stalker x2 and Wild Ghoul x3.
Immediately after this ambush, a Feral Ghoul stalker will attack from behind as you begin again. Continue forward until you reach the completely destroyed Automatron subdivision. Activate it to try to figure out what happened. Shortly after you begin again, Swampers x2 will attack.
Then Dogmeat will stop at a fence with another bloody rag on it. Take the rag and talk to the dog to restart tracking. After a short infestation by a couple of Dutneys, you will come to Fort Hagen .
