Chapter 2: Sanctuary

Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the light, then continue onward. The small control room nearby provides Nuka-Cola and Rad-X. Grab a can of Cram and 10mm ammo from the blue-and-white camp. Head southeast along the path into town.

You can continue exploring or speak with Codsworth to advance the quest. Afterwards, you'll have plenty of time to explore.
A couple of Radroaches are in the house south of the Sanctuary entrance. A suitcase with the "Novice" lockpicking skill in the bedroom contains only lockpicks and a Pompadour Wig (VAL 15). The next house in the same direction is securely protected by a bomb trap, and a computer terminal requiring the "Novice" skill contains a drug dealer's accounting records. To reach the safe, disarm the trap, then the bomb, and then use the Lockpicking skill:
- Pipe Pistol, .38 Ammo x32, Pre-War Cash x12, Fancy Comb.
The house to the east with a cooking station in front (a cooktop hanging over a small fire) hides another Radroach. Be sure to check the cooking station to familiarize yourself with the available recipes. The house across from Codsworth, the one with all the crafting benches in front, contains:
- a Stimpak in the bathroom cabinet,
- a shovel outside
- a homemade battery outside under the weapon crafting bench;
Talk to Codsworth to find out how long you were dreaming in the Sanctuary. He will give you a hologram recorded by your wife. He will also offer to help you explore the city.
Head north with him and kill some Dutneys in several different houses. Get seven lockpicks from the bathroom in the second house where Codsworth will approach. Talk to him again, and he will offer to go to Concord for further searching. First, clear out the rest of the houses in Sanctuary that have goodies. There is a root cellar behind the house to the north at the end of town:
- RadAway, Stimpak, Blood Pack, Large amount of food (and some beer), Purified Water x3, .45 Round x22, Shovel, Gold Beam x3, Pre-War Money;
- Safe (Advanced): TODO open safe;
Then, go into the house above to find a gold-plated lighter in a drawer and 10mm ammo in a cabinet in the same room. The house to the south on the same side of the street (the one with the Codsworth flying in front) is your old house. Inside, take the Yellow Fedora (PER +1) from the dresser with the pumpkin. Open the safe (novice):
- .38 ammo x12, 10mm pistol, 10mm ammo x25
- Buffout, Mentats, Rad-Away
- Pre-War Money x18, gold-plated lighter
Once you've completely looted the city, head to the bridge in the southeast. Grab two grenades from the trash can and continue in the same direction to the Red Rocket truck stop. This gas station is recommended for your home base, as you can find all the various crafting stations in one neat spot.

Across the bridge from the Sanctuary, loot the bodies:

Look in the bag in the gym at the base of the statue near the bridge for a Short Pipe Rifle and some .38 ammo. Continue toward the gas station and greet Dogmeat the dog. Take him as a companion if you like (recommended). Soon, six Mole Rats will come running after you. Stand back and let Dogmeat distract them while you pick off the guests with VATS. Search the building:
- Cram, Mentats, Stimpak x2 (one on the floor), Nuka Cola
- Pipe Pistol: DMG (13), RAT (55), RNG (83), ACC (57), WGT (2.3), VAL (20) -

Enter the computer terminal to learn about the cave beneath the station. Outside, find a few items near the water tower:
- Stimpak, RadAway, Purified Water x3
Then enter a small cave down the hill a few meters south of the station...
Mole Rats' Cave

Make your way into the cave and kill the first mole rat you see. Then, turn back to the cave entrance and wait for the second mole rat to emerge from the ground. Defeat it, then the third, which is likely still hiding in the cave. The eastern part of the cave is radioactive, but you can run through and grab another 10mm pistol and some ammo, as well as the "Scavengers" Award, given to the Gas Station owner for being so environmentally friendly. How ironic. A small alcove to the north contains a Tactical Hair Trigger 10mm Pistol in a bag.
In the West, sneak up the narrow tunnel and double-hit the Mole Rat in the next cave. Open the Novice Lock:
