Brotherhood of Steel Citadel
We follow Dr. Li and the other scientists (if any) to the Citadel courtyard. Elder Linos meets us there and strikes up a conversation with Madison (aka Dr. Li). She explains to the nearly-resigned Elder that all is not lost, and that our father has found a way to activate Project Purity using the G.E.C.K. After their conversation, we speak with Madison again, then with the Elder, asking about the things we're interested in, and also learn that we need to speak with Scribe Rothschild.
We head to the lab and find the man we need. We speak with him and learn that he can't help us directly, but he will provide access to a Wall-Tech terminal. We exit into the courtyard and head to Wing A, where, using the map, we find the terminal we need. It provides lists of shelters throughout the District of Columbia, although information on most of them has been lost. But we need Vault 87. Find it and read the data. Then return to the scribe.
In the lab, he'll show us the location of the vault we need, but he'll also tell you that the direct route to it is blocked due to high radiation levels. Going directly would be suicide, but there's a detour through the Lamplight Caves.
For fun, you can wander around the Citadel and talk to the inhabitants. If you have good karma, you can recruit Paladin Cross, who resides in the lab, as your companion.
Lamplight Cave
Since the distance to the desired cave is quite long, we recommend teleporting to a closer location, such as Casey's Garage. It's definitely open thanks to previous storyline quests. Once teleported, we set out. Our final destination is Lamplight Cave, the entrance to which is festooned with garlands. Upon reaching the cave, we enter and, after walking forward a bit, we come up against a large, homemade gate. A boy sits on the other side, calls us a lanky guy and refuses to let us in. We speak with him. Two options follow:
- if you have a high Speech skill, we persuade him;
- if not, we'll have to complete the side quest "Rescue from Paradise ," the walkthrough for which is described below.
Once through the gate, we speak with Mayor MacReady and ask him about Vault 87 and how to get there. It turns out there are two paths to the place we need. One leads through the Killing Passage, teeming with super mutants; the other, through a door no one can open. While the second option requires us to speak with Joseph, who explains that to open the door we simply need to find the right password (requiring a high level of science), and through it we'll immediately reach the vault, the first option is far more complicated.
We speak with the Mayor and ask him to let us into the Killer Passage. He doesn't object at all and immediately opens the gate for us. Before our journey, it's a good idea to stock up on ammo and stimulants in town. We enter and immediately reach a crossroads. Two paths lie ahead: left and straight ahead. A large number of aggressive mutants with heavy weapons await us on the left. So we head straight ahead.
We reach a hut and kill the super mutant hiding inside. Several more will come running at the noise and gunfire. We deal with them, search the hut, and, entering a small cave behind it, pick up a book from the toilet, which adds one point to our barter.
We move on, trying not to miss the passage on the right (if you take it, you'll fight your way through a swarm of mutants and return to our starting point at the very beginning). Reaching the next enemies, we kill them and, avoiding the traps, reach a small fork. Head right (there's nothing interesting on the left except a tripwire), find a room with an iron door, and search it. Grab the stimulants from the first aid kit—you'll likely be in dire need of them by now—and exit through another door.
A little further on, you'll find yourself in Vault 87's Reactor Chamber . The quest will be complete, and the next one will immediately begin.
