Chapter 10: Boston Airport (Final Game)

Return to the Institute and speak with Father regarding the quest. He has decided it is time to officially announce the Institute's existence to the entire Commonwealth and request that no one interfere with their work to save humanity. You will have the opportunity to assist with the speech. Use the microphone next to him to begin. Whether you adopt a gentle or threatening tone, Father will react in kind. Complete the speech, and then you will travel to Diamond City to modify their transmitter and maximize accessibility to people from the Commonwealth.

In Diamond City, go to the radio station and you will find three devices with empty slots. The following parts are in the metal box below:

- Radio Thing With Buttons

- Radio Thing With Dials

- Radio Thing With Tubes

Insert them into the devices from left to right in the order listed above, in the same order they appear when taken from the box. Once completed, you can return to the Institute. To find Father, enter Advanced Systems and follow the quest marker through the maintenance tunnel to reach the reactor room. Speak with Father on the walkway, and he will then address the group of scientists. Enter the reactor room and insert the core. Close the door and use the computer terminal to initiate the sequence. Speak with Father again, and he will ask you to attend the next board meeting as the Institute's new acting director.

New Father

Attend a second Directorate meeting, this time as Acting Director. Regardless of whether you wish to fight the Brotherhood, the Directorate is determined to do so, and you only have to decide whether to focus on Synth production or developing new weapons. Make the executive decision, after which the meeting will be concluded. If you are a member of the Railroad faction and are in the final stages of the "Underground Undercover" quest, a messenger will run up and give a false reason to return to the room. There, you will find Z1-14, who brings urgent news that the BoS has discovered the location of the Railroad headquarters and is preparing for a surprise attack.

You can help the Railroad defend against the attack, but you will soon be forced to choose between the Institute and the Railroad faction, causing permanent hostility between them.

Deal with the Railroad

After the meeting, return to Father to discuss the next step: eliminating any factions that pose a threat to the Institute. Unfortunately, you may be a member of one or more of these factions, but the only way to remain loyal to the Institute is to follow Father's instructions. He will first order the Railroad completely eliminated by killing all its leaders.

Head to the Old North Church. If you're involved with the Railroad, you can find Desdemona on the church's first floor, or if you're working on the quest "Underground Cache." You can execute her here, which will, of course, turn the other NPCs hostile. Then, head down and follow the crypt tunnel until you reach a large wheel with a railway seal.

Spin the wheel to point to each letter in the word "RAILROAD ," activating the device each time you land on a letter. When finished, the entrance will open, and you'll gain access.

If you've been involved with the Railroad up to this point and have progressed far enough in "Underground Undercover," Slava, one of the targets, is already dead. Furthermore, if the "Railroad" or "Siege Warfare" quests are active, Tinker Tom may not be present. In this case, kill any leaders you can find, then wait a day or so for Tinker Tom to return to headquarters. Deacon is known to wander the Commonwealth from time to time, so if the quest doesn't update after killing all the leaders, check your map to see if you missed Deacon.

Most Railroad leaders have a Railroad Rifle, which is also available as a reward for completing "Underground":

- Railroad Rifle

DMG (201), Railroad Spikes, RAT (10), RNG (119), ACC (69), WGT (14.4), VAL (290).

Once the deed is done, return to Father to receive his condolences (if you were involved with the Railroad). However, the violence is not over yet, as another, more serious threat to the Institute's existence exists. The Brotherhood of Steel...

Deal with the Brotherhood of Steel

Speak with Dr. Watson in Advanced Systems and you'll be briefed on a proposed mission to Boston Airport to hack the Liberty Prime robot and use it to destroy the Brotherhood's massive flagship, The Prydwen.

After the briefing, use the central elevator to reach the relay, just like when you explored the Mass Fusion building earlier. Before heading to Boston Airport, make sure your Power Armor is in top condition and you have spare items and medical supplies. The next battle is the biggest in the game so far (2015). Upon arriving at the airport, you'll be just out of range of the BoS forces guarding the main entrance, as well as their Liberty Prime robot. The first problem to solve is likely the anti-aircraft defenses.

Kill the two Vertibirds when they appear. When the job is done, proceed to the airport entrance. Heavy weapons like the Fat Man and Rocket Launcher will likely be the most effective way to cut through high-level Brotherhood troops. Instead of taking up position and attempting to eliminate all BoS forces yourself (which is one option), you can face a small door to the left of Liberty Prime and the heavily defended main entrance. You're attempting to destroy three generators that power the electromagnetic field protecting the BoS from the Institute. The generators themselves are very fragile and can be destroyed with any weapon. Follow

the marker to the first generator and fire a couple of shots at it, which will immediately summon several high-level synths as the electromagnetic field partially collapses. Now you'll have a bit less time. Climb the nearby stairs to the second generator on the rooftop platform, where it's guarded by high-ranking BoS troops. The remaining generator is at the top of the control tower and can be destroyed by using the nearby elevator. At the top, kill the Protectron and a couple of turrets, then destroy the generator.

It's a good idea to save your game before dealing with the last generator. I encountered a glitch that prevented the quest from updating after destroying the third generator. Reloading your save may resolve the issue.

After the generators are destroyed, you'll need to return to the main entrance on the first level, where Liberty Prime is located. A serious glitch occasionally occurs here as well.

As you approach Liberty Prime, the Gen-1 Synth should teleport and begin reprogramming the robot. If it doesn't teleport, you'll likely need to quickly travel to a nearby location and then back again. If you encounter this glitch, the Synth should appear shortly after you return to the airport.

You'll need to protect the Synth hacker from a Brotherhood attack while he completes his work. Be prepared to destroy more armored troops and another Vertibird. Once Liberty Prime has fully reprogrammed, he'll return to life and immediately recognize the Prydwen airship as a "communist threat." Just one laser shot and the airship will crash land. FOREVER. Run to the airport perimeter and teleport to a location near Nordhagen Beach, where you can watch the crash from afar, completing the "Airship" quest and starting "Nuclear Family"...

Nuclear family

This quest marks the conclusion of the main story for the Institute faction. Return and go to Father's quarters to speak with him one last time. After this, the game will allow you to continue your journey through the Commonwealth...
