Arefu | Fallout 3

Arefu

A tiny settlement on the remains of Interstate 495, almost in the center of the Capital Wasteland and northwest of Vault 106. Accessible only from the south, it plays a key role in the "Blood Ties" quest. Amusingly, the settlement's name is a perfect play on the word. "Arefu" is both the central part of the word "Careful!" in a broken road sign and the name of a village in Romania, near which the 13th-century castle of Prince Vlad the Impaler, better known as Count Dracula, stood.

Upon entering Arefu, the protagonist is greeted with a grenade. Sheriff Evan King will then apologize, explaining that he mistook the protagonist for a member of the so-called "Family," which has been terrorizing the settlement for a long time. He asks the protagonist to check on the town's inhabitants. He himself cannot leave his post for fear of an attack by the Family.

The investigation reveals the death of two village residents, Mr. and Mrs. West, and their son, Ian, presumably kidnapped. The sheriff will reveal that he saw Ian by the river talking with members of the Family. This will trigger the quest "Blood Ties," if Lucy West hasn't already given it in Megaton. Trophies: the "Repair +10" figurine on the table in the sheriff's house. The lock can be picked without losing karma. Quantum Cola is on the nearby pier, and the "Illustrated Guide to Fist Fighting" is in the house, which is locked until this quest is completed. The latter is the owner's property, and stealing it results in a loss of karma. There, in the water, next to the pier, is a Swamp Nest (they respawn) and an Easter egg of the game - a submerged car, a skeleton with concrete blocks on its legs, a zinc box with 10mm rounds and a silent 10mm pistol.

Fordham Flash Memorial Field

Located east of Arefu, near the Moonlight outdoor movie theater, it's visible from a distance by the chain-link fence surrounding the baseball field. Several Raiders are on the field itself. If you sneak up close in stealth mode, you can see them "playing" baseball. There are no significant trophies here, and the location itself has no value other than fast travel. "Fordham Flash" was one of the nicknames of Francis "Frankie" Frisch, a famous 20th-century baseball player. Frisch died of injuries sustained in a car accident near Elkton, Maryland, very close to the location in the game.

Hamilton's Cache

A small cave in the rocks leads to an underground complex, which may be an abandoned military base or a medical lab. Sheriff Evan King of Arefu mentions this location as one of the Family's possible hideouts during the "Blood Ties" quest. However, this location is mostly associated with Three Dog's reward after completing the corresponding quest. TD will give the coordinates of a weapons and ammunition stash at the very end of the bunker. The bunker is inhabited by various hostile creatures (radscorpions, radroaches, rad-Raiders...). Outside the stash, loot includes: "Duck and Cover!", Quantum Cola, and a Bottlecap Mine. Inside the stash: "Guns and Bullets," Mini Nuke, Invisibility Glove, and (randomly) a suit of Power Armor, a Power Armor helmet, or a Power Glove.

Seneca Northwest Metro Station

Part of the pre-war metro system. The station itself is almost completely destroyed, with the exception of a section of restrooms, Murphy and Barrett's laboratory, and a maintenance tunnel leading to the station and the Meresti depot. Loot is minimal, with the exception of the occasional Quantum Cola from a vending machine. This is the location of a "minor" mission for two zombie chemists, Murphy and Barrett, who are busy producing the Superjet and can task the protagonist with obtaining Sugar Bombs for them. In this case, they will sell the drug to the protagonist. The other two components for the drug are regular Jet and Abraxo laundry detergent. When completing the mission involving the Family and Aref, when asked about the Family's whereabouts, the player will respond: "I think they're somewhere east of us. There should be a deeper tunnel leading to the Meresti metro station." The entrance to this tunnel is actually located in the corner of Murphy and Barrett's lab, through a hatch in the floor surrounded by barrels of radioactive waste.

Depot Meresti

The old subway depot is directly west of Agatha's house. An easy way to reach the Family's abode. An open hump yard with several rusted trains and an entrance to the tunnels. To the south-southeast of the depot is a group of buildings unmarked on the main map, one of which contains a copy of Tumblers Today (in the bathroom), three safes, and some minor loot. The maintenance tunnel can be accessed through a door on the facade of the depot building. The tunnel itself contains a number of traps, including a tripwire-mounted shotgun and a booby trap in a baby stroller. Another copy of Tumblers Today is in a wall alcove of the maintenance tunnel near the meeting place with Robert. This is a possible ambush site for Talon Corporation mercenaries.
