Junktown
Upon entering the city, you'll be met by a guard who will tell you to put away your weapons. Do so; he might not let you into the city at night, so just wait until morning. When entering, make sure you don't have any weapons in your hands. Go into the white building on the left, to Dr. Mordbid's clinic. Go down the hatch immediately behind him, where you'll meet a small dwarf.
Talk to him abruptly and rudely, and he'll tell you about Mordbid's connection to a certain Iguana Bob, who sells iguanas in the Hub using components supplied by the Doc in the form of human parts. I don't recommend seeking treatment from this doctor, as his guards will attack you if you don't have ten caps to pay him. Next, proceed to the next location, to a house guarded by two guards. This is the local town hall.
As soon as you finish talking with Mayor Killian, a black man with a rifle will burst through the door, bearing a greeting from Gizmo, the casino owner and local gang leader, and start shooting at the mayor. If you help Killian's guards deal with him, Killian will offer to help you obtain evidence of Gizmo's involvement in the crime. Take the tape recorder and the bug and head to the casino.
Talk to Gizmo. The dialogue should be something like, "Your hitman failed the job, so leave it to me." When Gizmo asks why he should trust you, explain that you're not from around here and that's just the kind of person Gizmo needs. He'll then tell you everything himself and offer to kill Killian himself. At this point, you have a choice: either kill Killian and turn the entire Djanktown police against you, or return to Killian with proof—Gizmo's confession. Of course, you can kill Killian in a more sophisticated way, using the steal skill (throw the armed dynamite into Killian’s inventory) and then the guards won’t notice anything.
If you decide to help Killian, go to Lars at the security station immediately after talking to him. It's located at the entrance to Junktown. Next, you'll have to fight Gizmo and his guard. After defeating him, return to the casino and loot the unique pistol from Gizmo's corpse. You'll have to break down a door on the right, and on the shelf you'll find a book on weapons; reading it will increase your Small Arms skill. As a reward from Killian, don't take the leather armor, as you can loot it for free from a corpse in Skunk's Bar.
As you pass, you'll likely notice some people asking you to get rid of a dog that's keeping them out of their house. If you're wearing a leather jacket, the dog, Dogmeat, will follow you, thinking you're its owner.
After dealing with Gizmo, go to the bar across the street, which is open in the evening, talk to the owner, and watch him shoot one of the local Skulz gang members. Take the leather armor from his corpse.
Next, talk to the singer, toss him five coins in his hat, and ask about the towns in the area. Several more locations will appear on your world map.
Have a drink with local regular Tycho, who will tell you a lot of interesting things. After completing the quest with Gizmo, he will join you. Incidentally, he is the most powerful companion in the entire game. Simply tell him that Killian asked you to restore order in the city, and Tycho will be on your team.
The Skulls
Lars will ask you to deal with the Skulls gang. This can be done in two ways: steal the urn from the bar owner. The urn is on the shelf. Then return to the Skulls and express your desire to join their gang. When asked if you're cool, simply show them the urn, and when offered to trash the bar, say you have some business to attend to, but will return later. Next, run to the security station and talk to Lars, who will set a trap and, with your help, destroy the Skulls.
Or talk to the girl at the entrance to the gang's lair and tell her she deserves more. Return in a few days and offer to sell out the entire gang.
Rent a room at the inn for the night. In the morning, the owner will come running and ask you to save the local prostitute, Cynthia. If you refuse, she will die. If you agree, try to persuade the crazy raider to let her go; if that doesn't work, just kill him. For this, Cynthia will serve you for free. You'll also receive the owner's gratitude. If you return the urn to the bartender, all the drinks in the bar will be on the house.
Gather as many items as possible and head to the Hub.
