HELIOS ONE

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough -> HELIOS ONE

HELIOS One - At the entrance, an NCR officer initially tries to chase us away, but he doesn't refuse the offer of help. We need to find a certain idiot in sunglasses inside the complex – someone named Fantastic – and talk to him about increasing the power plant's output.

We go inside ( the ED-E robot should be with us). After a bit of wandering, we find this idiot, Fantastic. He's a little crazy, but we don't care. We need to connect to the HELIOS One computer using the Western and Eastern reflector control terminals. Then we need to direct these reflectors in the direction Fantastic instructed. The problem here is that all these things have a specific security system, and no one dares to get involved in this... Fantastic gives us one password.

We can go, but there's another guy next to Fantastic—Ignacio Rivas. We talk to him and see that he's quite a mysterious character: he talks about a certain superweapon called ARCHIMEDES, which the NCR doesn't yet know about, and it's better if they never do... Ignacio is clearly a pacifist. He suggests doing the same thing, but directing the reflectors' energy evenly, rather than in specific spots... It looks like we'll have to decide. Ignacio also gives us the password. And then ED-E wakes up and starts spouting some nonsense from his notes.

We head outside, find both terminals, and avoid the simple traps—bear traps, mines, and a crossbow (if we can, we deactivate them).

There might be NCR guard dogs in the fence around one of the terminals, and they'll attack—if we kill them, the NCR will start firing at us... I used the Stealth Boy and let ED-E kill two of the dogs, and the third didn't notice me. We activate both terminals. Now we need to go to the Solar Tower, where a serious gang of mechanical killers awaits us: several automated turrets, a robobrain, and a Mister Guard...

Using ED-E, we take them out and make our way to the HELIOS One main computer. At the very end, there's an inconspicuous door that you wouldn't immediately recognize; behind it is the Overview Level. That's where the main computer is. But bam—it's running low on power... There's an auxiliary generator nearby, but it's broken, too! A certain repair skill (35) and one unit of scrap metal are required... if we have it, we repair it ourselves; if not, we climb the iron ladder and find the Python robot there. It needs to be activated. Then it will repair the auxiliary generator itself.

We're starting up the HELIOS One computer. We have several choices here. 1 - where to direct the energy: as Sci-Fi Guy suggested, to other lands, evenly. 2 - whether to activate the ARCHIMEDES security system, which will destroy nearby NCR soldiers. If we activate it, they'll all be killed, earning you a bad reputation and Outcast status...

For example, we don't activate ARCHIMEDES, distributing the energy evenly. But then the computer reports a power shortage, damn it! We need to go higher - where the Python robot was, there's a door outside - the reflector control console is there. We hope to pull the lever, but it only works at 9 AM or 3 PM, during times of greatest solar activity. We need to wait...

We pull the lever; we're blinded, but not fatally. If you activated the ARCHIMEDES security system, you can watch deadly rays kill NCR soldiers... We go downstairs and find Ignacio Rivas, who thanks us for making the right choice, and we gain good reputation with another cult, seemingly a good one... plus a book. The quest is complete.

Before leaving the HELIOS One building, let's go and rummage through its storage areas - there's some loot...

(Note: It's also worth mentioning that in quest 15, energy can be distributed to Archimedes without turning on the Archimedes security system. Then, picking up a unique pistol on the outskirts of Vegas, you can call down a solar energy strike on enemies from satellites once a day.)
