Little Lamplight (quests)
On October 23, 2077, 82 students from Early Down Elemental School, accompanied by several teachers (including fourth-grade teacher Carrie Delaney) and their parents, set out on a field trip to Lamplight Caverns. After spending long hours in the caves, they were about to leave when the ground beneath their feet gave way. The lanterns went out, plunging the cave into darkness, and many children began screaming in fear. When all was quiet, one of the adults went to explore the surface.
Returning, he reported that the entire area, as far as the eye could see, was covered in mushroom clouds of nuclear explosions. Time passed. Little by little, all the adults died: some from accidents, some from the journey to the surface. The last surviving adult, Carrie Delaney, abandoned the children to their fate and became a scavenger. One of the older children, Jason Grant, took over leadership of the group. Over the following months, the children managed to discover the entrance to Vault 87. They spent long hours at the closed door, begging to be let inside.
Finally, when one of the adults inside the Vault ordered them to leave because they were "already dead," the children turned against all adults and formed a closed community, expelling anyone over 16. The Little Lamplight settlement consists of a cluster of huts clustered in a large cavern and illuminated by strings of lamps. The children who make up the cave's population are engaged in cultivating and trading radiation-absorbing mushrooms.
Many of the citizens of Big City are actually natives of this settlement, having left upon turning 16. To enter the settlement, you must speak with Mayor McCready and accept the quest to free two children, Sammy and Squirrel, who have been kidnapped by slave traders from Paradise Falls. With a high enough Speech skill or the Childishness trait, you can persuade him to let you into the settlement just like that.
Laser Luzye
The latter feature is useful when talking to almost all the inhabitants of Little Lamplight. This is especially true when talking to Bivvy, as it allows you to receive the unique "Lasel's Luzier" (AC 28 MFC, D 30) from him instead of paying 500 BC (or 250 with a developed Barter skill). When the hero first arrives in Little Lamplight, they witness the expulsion of one of the villagers (Velcro), who has just turned 16. If you speak to him, he'll mention he's going to the Big City. If you're so inclined, you can offer to escort him to the city.
You can either leave Little Lamplight immediately and go with the exile, or ask him to wait at the entrance. Then, once all business in Little Lamplight is completed, you can speak with him, and he'll join the party. A BP to the Big City will allow the exile to safely join its inhabitants (AP and karma). The only thing I recommend is visiting Big City first and disarming the bridge leading to the gate, so as not to blow up the guy at the end of his journey. This location is the only place in the Fallout 3 world where everything is resolved solely through diplomacy. The game prohibits killing children.
Furthermore, this is one of the locations where you can complete the quest "Those!" With a high enough conversation skill, you can convince the mayor to accept Brian Wilkes into the community.
Paths of the Dead
This isn't a separate location. It's a passageway behind the souvenir kiosk in Little Lamplight, leading to a chain of underground passages leading to the entrance to Vault 87. Enemies: mutants. Trophies: "US Army: 30 Hand Flamethrower Techniques" (in the southwest tunnel); "Tales of a Junktown Trader" (in the restroom, in the SE corner of the room north of the entrance to Vault 87).
Escape from Paradise Lost
If the hero fails to convince Mayor McCready to let them into Little Lamplight due to a low "Speak" skill or a lack of the "Childishness" trait, they will have to complete his quest to rescue Sammy and Squirrel from Paradise Falls slavers to earn his trust and gain access to the settlement. Although this quest is not part of the main storyline, it may be necessary to progress the game.
