Don't Starve Walkthrough → How to Tame Beefalo (Part 1)
Necessary items
No animal taming is complete without certain tools, right? On this challenging path, we'll need a specific list of items. They're all located in the "Tools" tab, and an Alchemy Machine is required to craft them. Let's take a look.
The Brush is one of the most useful tools. It's used to increase Beefalo's docility and domestication level, reducing the domestication time from 20 in-game days to 15 in-game days , while also giving you 1 unit of Beefalo Wool.
The saddle hook is a saddle savior. It allows you to remove a Beefalo's saddle. Beefalos aren't particularly docile in the early stages of domestication and don't like wearing saddles forever. They'll shed them when their docility level is low, reducing their durability.
A Salt Stone is an item that makes your life easier. It's used to maintain your pet's domestication level. Beefalo will completely lick one stone in 15 in-game days , after which you'll need a new one.
Note: Nearby wild Beefalo, Koalos, Volt Goats, and Eyeless Deer also react to Salt Stones! Place it in a secluded area!

Tamability is the tamability of your Beefalo. The maximum value is 100%.
◆ Well-fed. If Beefalo is well-fed for 10 seconds (satiety level > 0 ), the tameness value increases by 0.1% . ( 20 seconds = 0.2% , 30 seconds = 0.3% , etc.)
◆ Riding. If you ride Beefalo for 10 seconds , the tameness value increases by 0.1% . ( 20 seconds = 0.2% , 30 seconds = 0.3% , etc.)
◆ Brushing. Using a Brush ( ) increases the tameness value by 1.7% .
Tamability Reduction:
◆ Player Attack. If you hit your Beefalo, congratulations! It has lost 30% of its tameability and you've extended the domestication process by 6 in-game days .
◆ Overfeeding. When overfed, Beefalo spits out rot and loses 1% of its tameability. If it's fully fed and you give it more food, it will lose another 1% .
◆ Hunger. If your Beefalo's hunger level is 0 and there's no Salt Stone nearby , it will lose 2.5% of its tameability every in-game day .
To maintain tameness, Beefalo needs to be fed plant food. Beefalo has 375 hunger points. It burns 300 hunger points per day. When its hunger level drops to 169, Beefalo will roar, indicating it wants a snack.
Feed
- Quantity per day 4 8 8 12 32 64
If all goes well, Beefalo will be domesticated in 20 in-game days (with daily use of the Brush ( ) - 15 in-game days ) and will then acquire a personality.
The riding time depends only on the taming value. If the taming value is greater than 0, the riding time lasts 15 seconds . During the domestication process, this increases to 4 minutes . After full taming, the riding time increases to 13 minutes .
Obedience
P - obedience
If:
◆ 50% > P > 40% → Beefalo will not allow you to mount it.
(If you cannot increase obedience, remove the saddle with the Saddle Hook ( )
◆ 40% > P > 10% → Beefalo will start throwing off the Saddle.
◆ P < 10% → Beefalo will not allow you to mount it. It will attack you.
Increasing obedience:
◆ Feeding. 1 unit of any plant food increases obedience by 10% .
◆ Brushing. Using a brush ( ) increases obedience by 40% .
(Instead of using a brush, it's easier to feed your Beefalo 4 branches, but be careful not to overfeed.)
Obedience Decrease:
◆ Time. Every 10 seconds, Beefalo loses 1%.
◆ Attacks by hostile creatures. Takes 0.01% from Beefalo.
◆ Overfeeding. Takes 30% from Beefalo.
◆ Haircut. Takes 100% from Beefalo.
◆ Attacks by a player. Takes 100% from Beefalo.
