Don't Starve Walkthrough → Biomes (Volcano Biomes)
In one of the updates, the structure became a full-fledged location, akin to the caves of the SW world. Features include high temperatures (resolved with cooling items) and new unique objects and creatures. The lava lake in the center of the location is incredibly hot, rendering any cooling items useless.
What you need to bring:
Tools, resources for creating endothermic fires, a summer fresh vest/flower shirt, a double umbrella, a tropical fan, cooling food, weapons, armor, and gunpowder.
Objects:
Obsidian Boulder: To destroy a boulder, you need to place a unit of gunpowder next to it (as close as possible). Then, set it on fire and run to a safe distance. It will drop 2 to 5 units of obsidian.
Coffee Bush: Most often found in a dried state. Fertilize with ash. After fertilization (after 3 days), coffee beans will grow on it. A fertilized bush can be dug up with a shovel and replanted on the surface (only on magma and ash turf).
Coffee - 4 beans (cooked over a campfire) can be brewed in a cauldron. Consuming it grants +5 to character speed for half a day.
Elephant Cactus: The cactus is not a simple creature; it's hostile. It has two types of attacks. Initially, it shoots spikes, dealing 33 damage (dodge), then each attack (even ranged) deals 20 damage. When destroyed, it drops cactus spikes, which can be crafted into armor. Like the coffee plant, it can be fertilized and replanted. It's useful for farming at the base (spiders, snakes, bees, birds, primates, etc.), as well as for defense against hounds.
Cactus Armor - Absorbs 80 damage + deals 17 damage to the attacking creature.
Dracuna's Lair: The habitat of draconians. Destroyed by gunpowder, it can be crafted in the construction tab.
Dracuna: A hostile mob that lives in its lair. It can also be encountered on the surface during the dry season (it appears from a meteorite rock). It deals weak damage and can be killed by any weapon.
Altar of Offerings: Active only during the dry season, it allows you to appease the volcano with items, thereby delaying its eruption. More detailed information on sacrifices can be found on Wikipedia [dont-starve.wikia.com]
Obsidian Workbench: Being near a workbench gives access to the "Volcanic" tab. You can craft obsidian tools and weapons, as well as a seafarer's staff and a howling shell.
Crafting
Machete: Cuts bamboo and vines twice as fast as a regular machete. After a certain number of hits, the cell turns yellow, then red. In the red state, it begins to set objects/creatures on fire and increases the character's temperature. Does not heat up during hurricane season, and glows in the dark in the red state.
Axe: Cuts trees twice as fast as a regular axe. Like a machete, in the red state it begins to set fire and increase the temperature. It also does not heat up during hurricane season, provides light, and instantly cools if thrown into water.
Armor: Reduces damage taken by 70%, grants immunity to fire, and sets attacking creatures on fire (be careful that creatures do not set your base or important resources on fire). Loses durability very slowly.
Spear: Has an initial damage of 51 units, but with each hit the weapon's heat and its damage increases, up to a maximum of 102 units. When heated, it sets creatures on fire, making it rather questionable.
Grenade: Used in the same way as a regular grenade. Deals 340 damage (a regular grenade deals 250). Also rather questionable, as it requires 3 Coconut Grenades to craft.
Volcanic Staff: Summons a barrage of volcanic rocks at the character's location when the staff is used for 3 seconds. Can be found on islands surrounded by obsidian. When picked up, it will cause a meteor shower, but will not change the season (unlike other traps).
Sailor's Staff: Equipping this staff in a weapon slot will change the wind (and waves) to a favorable one, allowing for easier navigation in the second and third seasons.
Howling Conch: When used, it summons a strong wind for half a day. A handy tool for collecting wind-blown resources.
Schedule and seasons
If the game is updated, the new schedule will be located in the folder:
- common\dont_starve\data\DLC0002\scripts\map, in the file volcanoschedule.lua.
Summer eruption schedule:
1) Summer day.
2) Waiting for the next wave in in-game days and hours.
3) Duration in in-game hours (1 day = 16 hours).
4) Intensity - how many stones fall per second.
5) Ash - delay/duration.
6) Smoke - delay/duration.
7) The first sound warning of an upcoming eruption (there are three in total).

Trap when picking up a Volcanic Staff (in theory, it has no effect on the volcano):

To avoid delving into all these tables, you can install a mod that will show the time until a volcanic eruption. This isn't a cheat, as you can calculate everything yourself using pen and paper (knowing how many minutes before the sound warning is heard). Or you can simply have a convenient visual indicator.
