Freeside (quests)

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough -> Freeside (quests)

The slums of New Vegas, divided between three factions: the Kings, the Van Graffs, and the Followers of the Apocalypse, familiar to us from previous installments. There's also a small shop called "Mickey & Ralph" and a bar called "Atomic Cowboy."

Kings

At first glance, it might seem like the Kings are just another gang of bandits, common in the wasteland. But that's far from the truth. Based in the former School of Transformation, they're trying to bring order to Freeside. The King is the leader of the gang and the primary quest giver. To see him, you'll need to pay a few caps at the entrance or talk your way into a guard.

Soldier's Blues

The King needs someone just like him right now, someone no one in Freeside knows yet. He asks you to deal with the mercenary Oris, who has recently been receiving almost all the security contracts. You need to find out what's going on. To do this, head to the North Gate and hire him. Follow him until he starts shooting at the thugs. Once the shooting subsides, you can try examining the "corpses" (40 Medicine), or use Perception 7 to expose Oris and barter to demand his money back.

Returning to the King, you receive the task of investigating the attack on the King's men.

The victims are located at the Old Mormon Fort (in outer Freeside near the North Gate). They will say they remember almost nothing, except that they were NCR men. Additionally, you can question Julie Farkas, who recommends visiting a dilapidated store in the western part at night. At this store, the NCR is distributing food aid to Freeside residents, but only those who provide a keyword can receive it. We head to Mickey & Ralph's (East Gate) and find a homeless ghoul willing to share information for bottle caps. For 100 bottle caps, he'll sell you the password "hope."

We go to the store and say it at the entrance. Inside, we find Major Kieren and learn her version of the night attack. Without spoilers, in short – there was a misunderstanding.

We head back to the King to tell him what happened. As soon as we enter the building, we're met by Pacer, the King's closest friend, who turns a blind eye to many of his less than savory dealings. Pacer asks that we not mention the misunderstanding when speaking with the King. We refuse and report to the King. During the conversation, a gang member will interrupt you, reporting a shootout with the NCR near the old train station. The King will ask you to resolve the matter. We head to the station and convince the major to settle the matter amicably by releasing Pacer. Once the matter is resolved, the King will declare himself in your debt. Don't waste this opportunity on trivial things like money, as it will be needed for the NCR quest.

If you haven't completed the side quests and investigated the shop, you risk getting into serious trouble with the NCR.

Note: The King can always be found either near the stage or in his quarters upstairs on the third floor.

A Dog's Life

This quest will result in Rex the cyberdog joining our party. If you "talk" to Rex, the king's robot dog, and then to the king himself, you can receive this quest. The king will tell you that his dog looks quite ill and asks you to cure him. Head to the Mormon fort and ask Julie about Rex's treatment. Julie will explain that Rex's brain is in poor condition and requires surgery, but it can only be performed in Jacobstown, as the followers lack the necessary equipment.

Head to Jacobstown and find Dr. Henry, a former Enclave scientist. He will perform the surgery if you bring him a new brain for Rex. There are three suitable brains available: Violet the Devil's dog (increases speed), the Legion's dog (unable to obtain due to poor relations with the latter), and the brain from Lady Gibson's dog (a bonus to attack damage).

While completing the quest, the dog must be with you at all times.

Followers of the Apocalypse

They settled in an old Mormon fort and are trying to bring light and goodness to the wasteland.

1. It's about time.  Julie Farkas will ask you to cure two locals of their addictions. They could have provided technical assistance to the followers if they had been cured. One of them is sitting in the ruins of a house across from Mickey & Ralph's, the other in a dilapidated house next to the Silver Rush. First, you need to dissuade the drug dealer from selling them drugs, and then get them a dozen doses of detox (with advanced science, you can get by with a can of Buffout, Psycho, two detox, and whiskey), or use your eloquence to convince them that the followers will help them (but then one of them will die).

Julie will also ask you to arrange for supplies for the fort outside of the quest. To do this, speak with one of the twin owners of the Atomic Cowboy.

Points of interest:

1. There's a snow globe in the fort's tower.

2. Arcade Gannon can also become your companion.

3. Followers can supply you with a choice of RadAway, Stimpak, or Rad-X every 24 hours.

Silver Rush

A store owned by the "shady" Van Graff family. I completed the first two quests for them, as the third one given by Jean-Baptiste conflicted with my beliefs.

1. The first quest asks us to act as a guard at the entrance – definitely take it.

2. The second is a simple courier quest.

3. And the third one asks us to bring Cassidy, clearly for ill-intentioned reasons.

Tips: Equip a stealth suit and steal anything unused from the display cases. First of all, one of the two plasma vivants in the entire wasteland.

Atomic Cowboy

A small drinking establishment owned by the Garrett twins.

1. Debt Collector.  At Frances's request, collect debts from the cowboy's customers. With good persuasion, you can force them to hand over everything, even their clothes.

After the first installment of the debts is collected, Francis will send you to the Strip to kill McLafferty, who owes a large sum. Killing him isn't necessary; you can force him to hand over his hat and demand money for lying to Francis about his death.

2. Atomic Tango.  James Garrett needs specialized workers to satisfy his most perverted clients. For those who enjoy "extensive tissue necrosis and whipping," he needs a ghoul cowboy. The Mormon Fort has one. Convincing Beatrix won't be easy.

I also need a sexbot for the owner of the damned technofetishists. The robot itself can be found in the Robotics complex, by walking all the way along the train station and turning left into a small passage through the trash.

Before going for the robot, stop by Mickey and Ralph; they'll help you program it (it'll take a while). You don't have to do this if you're 80-something. In the complex itself, you'll need to hack either the terminal or simply find the access code in one of the cabinets. You can also test the robot before sending it to the customer. The latter, the smooth talker, will agree without further ado.

Mickey and Ralph

They don't give out any quests. But you can persuade them to sell you some special weapons. Also, if you help Cachino in the quest "How Little We Know," you'll receive an 8BILLION PIMPBOY as thanks for Omerta starting to buy weapons from them again.
