Fishing loot (boxes) | Terraria

Terraria Wiki → Fishing loot (boxes)

Fishing is a game mechanic that involves casting a fishing rod into a body of water (  water, honey, or lava) with bait. When you're near a body of water, click on it to cast your line. Click again when the bobber starts bobbing up and down, and you'll likely get your catch.

Fishing tasks

Fishing quests involve fishing in a specific biome and at a specific height or depth, which can be learned from the fisherman. Each quest has its own requirements, and you don't need to speak to the fisherman to accept them, but the chance of accidentally finding the required fish is very small. The fish required for a quest cannot be caught if the player already has the required fish in their inventory.

Factors

In fishing, there are a number of factors that determine the rarity of your catch. These factors are combined into a single factor, "fishing skill," which determines the chance of getting a more valuable catch. Below, you'll see a table listing the items that affect your fishing skill. The item's effect will be indicated in green or red .

  • The strength of the fishing rod is taken into account.
  • The strength of the bait is taken into account.
  • Equipped items and potions are taken into account.
  • The time of day is taken into account.
  • The size of the reservoir is taken into account. Reservoirs with more than 300 blocks of liquid will not negatively affect fishing skill.
  • A fisherman without high-tensile line has a 1 in 7 chance of it breaking. The chance of losing bait remains the same even if the line breaks. High-tensile line will never break.

Requirements

Successful fishing requires 75 connected liquid blocks (1,000 for the ocean and 50 for honey). The surface area (where the bobber floats) continues to connect liquid blocks as long as they are beneath it. If liquid blocks are not beneath the surface area, they will not be counted. A player can successfully fish in a body of water 1 block wide and 75 blocks deep. The distance of the bobber and the player from the body of water is irrelevant.

You can't fish if your character is in water, even partially. However, you can fish while moving, flying, using a grappling hook, riding a slug, or even standing in water while using a specific item, such as waterwalking boots. You can also fish in lava, but only with a fire rod.

There are two types of boxes:

  • Regular boxes, the usefulness of the items dropped from them, which goes on a scale of Wooden>Iron>Gold.
  • Biome boxes that can contain items from their native region.
