Portal 2 Walkthrough → Chapter 1: A Courtesy Call
Waking up in a room, we follow the narrator's instructions and go back to bed. Upon awakening, we approach the door, hearing the voice of a small robot named Wheatley. He asks us to say a few simple phrases: "Yes," "Apple." We respond by pressing the spacebar.
Alarms and the narrator's voice signal an emergency evacuation. The walls break, and our room begins to shift through space. Reaching the old complex, we wait for the portals to activate so we can escape our confinement.
The first test is fairly simple: press the button, pick up the cube, and place it on the button. We proceed through the door to the elevator. We find ourselves in the next test chamber. Three small rooms lie ahead. Nearby are the corresponding consoles. By activating them, we can enter the rooms through the portal behind us. We take out the cube and place it on the button in the right room. We leave the chamber through the central room. Finally, we find the portal gun. For now, we only have one function.
In the next test, a cube falls into a pit. We create a portal under it, and it appears right next to the button. We place the cube on the button. Next comes the next chamber. We create another portal under the cube in the pit and jump after it. We drop the cube down onto the button. We shoot a new portal to the platform opposite and drop another cube down onto the button. In chamber #5, we first activate the console. When the cube falls, we create a portal under it.
We pick it up and place it on the button. We climb the stairs, glance around, and notice the spot where the cube will land. We create a portal under it in advance. The second console ensures that the cube, jumping through the second portal, doesn't fall into the water.
You'll need to press it when the cube dives into the first portal. Place it on the button and proceed further. In the sixth chamber, you'll be introduced (if you haven't played Portal before) to the rule of inertia, or rather, "What goes in fast, comes out fast" (a quote from the first Portal). In the second part, the principle is the same, but you can reach it not only by jumping, but more on that later. Make a portal in the pit and jump into it. Thanks to inertia, we fly far forward through the second portal. Repeat the same process again, but this time with the cube. Place it on the button and proceed to the second part of the challenge. This time, we control the desired height ourselves, so we create a portal on the half-bent platform on the left.
Jump into the pit, where the second portal has already been created. Reach the cube and throw it to the right. Make a new portal as high as possible on the opposite side. Fly over and place the cube on the button. The door is open, so make another jump. Wheatley meets us in the seventh chamber and asks us to follow him. It's time for him to detach from the rails. We pick him up and attach him to the panel. Turn away to let Wheatley perform some shenanigans.
We grab it and keep going until we reach the main control room. A few seconds later, we'll be carried to the surface, where we'll meet GlaDOS herself! She drops us into a pit to go through some good old-fashioned tests. (It's strange, but in the first Portal, it was definitely a 40,000C fire-destruction chamber.)
We discover a new portal gun that lets you create two portals. We move forward, avoiding obstacles with the portal gun.
So, you've completed Chapter 1 in the best game (in my opinion - editor's note) in the world ;).
