Achievement Tips

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough -> Achievement Tips

Having migrated to Steam, the game inherited its traditional achievement system. Among the fifty commemorative badges, there are both standard ones, earned upon completing the game, and those that require considerable effort. We'll discuss these now.

Achievements requiring you to inflict 10,000 points of damage with a specific weapon type hold a special place. Medals for regular and energy weapons are easy to obtain—just spray your enemies with plasma and lead; melee combat and explosives are more challenging.

Fists alone aren't effective, especially against monsters, so to earn the "Fist Fighter" award, stock up on power or spiked brass knuckles . Caesar's legionaries (as well as common bandits, demolitionists, and Devils) are, surprisingly, perfect for punching bags, thanks to their weak armor but ample health. Melee attacks also wear down enemies, rendering them practically ineffective when you're bludgeoning them.

The tactics are similar with melee weapons , but it's best to fight monsters. Provoke an enemy pack and run back, swinging something heavy in front of you ( a rebar or sledgehammer will do , or even better, Tabitha's "Super Sledgehammer" from Black Mountain). If you don't let enemies get too close, you can hit everyone without taking any damage.

The hardest thing is to deal 10,000 damage with explosives . This can be accomplished in several ways: throw dynamite or a grenade at a pack of bighorn sheep (they have a lot of health and usually travel in dense packs), plant C4 explosives at a neutral camp of a potential enemy, and then detonate them, or use anti-personnel mines, planting them in narrow passages and then luring enemies into that area.

Restoring 10,000 health points with food and stimulants is unlikely to be possible in a single playthrough, as it's not justifiable to develop both medicine and survival simultaneously; it's better to focus on one or the other. Another challenging task is picking fifty pockets, as this carries the risk of losing karma. Try to steal from enemies or those you don't intend to befriend, and to avoid being caught, use stealth combat.
