Player Companions (Part 1)

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough -> Player Companions (Part 1)

As you wander the wasteland, you may encounter friendly characters who want to accompany you. At any given time, you can have one human (or humanoid, such as a mutant or ghoul) and one non-human (robot or animal) companion.

Each companion provides unique bonuses to your character, such as increasing the effectiveness of medicines or boosting certain stats. These bonuses are only active while they're with you and disappear once you dismiss them. Each companion has a unique destiny that can unfold as the game progresses. Get to know your companions better, and you'll learn a lot about them and the wasteland.

Player companions in Fallout: New Vegas

Boone lost his wife, but he still harbors guilt and rage. A former member of the NCR's elite reconnaissance battalion, Boone still retains his accuracy and composure. His weapon of choice is a hunting rifle with a scope, which he wields expertly.

Boone's range at which he can engage enemies can sometimes exceed the player's own effective range. His special ability allows him to highlight enemies while aiming or using binoculars. So, even if your character isn't a fan of melee combat, working with Boone can easily wipe out entire groups of enemies without moving. Remember, the highlighting feature works even at night.

Location: Novak

Partner Perk:Spotter  - When Boone is your companion, all targets will be highlighted, regardless of whether you are aiming.

Personal Quest 1: "One for My Baby"  - Takes the 1st Recon Battalion (+1 Perception, +5% Critical Hit Chance).

Personal Quest 2: "I Forgot to Forget"  - 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Body Armor, 1st Reconnaissance Group Assault Armor (reward depends on the answers chosen; the suits are identical in characteristics, differing only in appearance).

Arcade - A descendant of a war-torn tribe in search of peace. He's highly ethical and moral, but he understands that this is a post-apocalyptic world and sometimes people need to be shot in the head.

Arcade is more concerned with the problems of the world around him and what needs to be done about global issues than with the needs of a few. While he appreciates the efforts of individuals, he firmly believes that it is more important to influence large-scale change in society than to address problems in just a few areas.

Location: Mormon Fort

Partner Perk: Improved Healing  - (Food and healing drugs are 20% more effective)

Personal quest: "For Auld Lang Syne"  - Assistance during the Hoover Dam siege from the Remnants, or Tesla Armor.

Cassidy (Cass) - Angry at everyone, including herself. Weary from years of hardship and a recent spate of terrible misfortunes, Cass is a despondent trader who's considering quitting the caravan business. She's smart, tough, and skilled with a gun, but she doesn't have the common sense to survive the ruthless caravan wars that have erupted across Nevada since the NCR expanded there.

Although she easily joins the player for a little money, she is still trying to figure out if she is suffering from bad luck or something sinister.

Location: Mojave Outpost

Partner Perk: "Whiskey and Rose"  - +3 to PU after drinking whiskey.

Personal quest: "Heartache by the Number"  - the "Hand of Vengeance" perk (a 15% bonus to its damage when using firearms), or "Frozen" (+50 HP).

Veronica - Inquisitive but frail. A Brotherhood of Steel apprentice scribe, assigned indefinitely to the role of "supply specialist," responsible for locating and fetching resources from the Brotherhood of Steel's bunker that the Brotherhood cannot produce itself.

Frustrated by what she sees as the Brotherhood's unrealistic and ignorant views of themselves and the world, Veronica has been a perpetual outsider, caught between her loyalty to the Brotherhood and her uneasy doubts about their current course.

Hardcore Mode Assistance: Veronica, the ideal companion in this mode, can provide access to a workbench at any time, making life much easier for a character with the "Thrifty Master" perk. Used Energy Batteries can be recycled on the fly.

Location: 188 – Trading Post

Partner Perk: "Scribe's Help"  - access to the workbench through dialogue.

Personal quest: "All About Worries"  - +4 to PU, or +30% to her damage in melee combat (depending on whether Veronica remains in the Brotherhood or not).
