Cyclops deer (Deerclops)
The Deerclops is a boss that has a chance to spawn at the end of winter. A creepy hissing sound can be heard at first, lasting a couple of minutes. Its footsteps make the ground shake. It enters your camp and begins to destroy absolutely everything. It can step over any wall below level two.
Unlike hounds, the Deerclops will not follow the player wherever they go, so it's possible to escape. The enemy has an area-of-effect attack that destroys everything in its vicinity, including nearby players (its radius is 2.5 berry bushes). Upon appearing, the Deerclops attempts to destroy structures near itself, ignoring others, and only then does it attack players.
The mob will also avoid walls unless they interfere with its ability to reach enemies, structures, or monsters. However, the area-of-effect attack is often concentrated on everything around it. Therefore, wall-based attacks aren't ideal for dealing with this monster, whose goal is to destroy all structures and move on.
Therefore, if you don't want to completely destroy the base, attract the Stag Cyclops to you or set it on a monster. Another option is to forget about the base, the loot is in the chests, and simply run away without getting into trouble (editor's note: but it's best not to do this).
When killed, the Cyclops can fall on structures, especially pig or rabbit houses, and destroy them. Repairing them will take a very long time due to the difficulty of obtaining ingredients.
How to kill him?
The Cyclops-Stag can be killed with a tactic of 1-2 spear strikes and retreating to the side. Try to do this to avoid getting hit by the freeze attack. Due to its high health bar, it will take a while for the boss to collapse (even if you're playing as Wolfgang), and keep in mind that your character's sanity will decrease as you progress. It's best to bring extra armor, as the Stag can kill you with two precise hits.
Two or three sets of wooden armor and football helmets should be enough, as well as 10 healing ointments to restore health. A cane and fast movement can help you avoid the Cyclops' attacks between your attacks and provide additional speed for disengaging from combat or healing wounds.
After two hits, the boss's attacks freeze the player for a short time, so fighting him head-on isn't recommended (editor's note: if you have a bad internet connection, you can try).
The Stag Cyclops doesn't sleep at night, but it can be put to sleep with Pan's Flute or Sleep Darts. Fire Darts and a Fire Staff are also quite effective, but be careful not to overdo it, as it will turn all your loot into ash (it drops 8 pieces of cooked meat, but the Stag Cyclops's eye will burn). It's also possible to freeze him and attack him from the side.
The boss is easily killed using the Oulipaha armor, which has the ability to hide in its shell and is similar in quality to Marble Armor. Before striking the monster, hide in its shell, then emerge and attack between attacks. Another quick method involves using the large number of fang traps. Simply bring the Stag into a trap-strewn area, and it will follow the traps toward the player. It takes 67 to kill it, but you can speed up the process with your spear.
Alternatively, you can send the Cyclops to other creatures, as its area-of-effect attack will provoke aggression in nearby creatures. For example, if it leads the monster into a Beefalo herd, it will damage several animals, causing the entire herd to attack the enemy. In such a situation, it's a good idea to have an ice staff with you so that you can freeze the Stag Cyclops without interfering with the Beefalo's slicing. Treants are also very effective in combat. Seal wintering camps are also useful: MacTac can dodge the boss and attack him with darts.
Another way to kill the Cyclops is to have a neutral Treant in the yard. Lead the stag to the trees so he can destroy them and provoke aggression from the forest defender. Assist the Ent with an ice staff, as with Beefalo.
The fastest way to kill the Stag Cyclops is with gunpowder, which deals 200 damage, and a torch. You'll need 20 gunpowder to complete the task. Simply place 19 gunpowder in a pile, and when the monster gets close, light it and observe the effect (it's recommended to freeze it before setting it on fire). To finish the boss, use a weapon that doesn't create fire. Keep the pile no more than 19 gunpowder, unless you want freshly cooked loot at the end.
You can simply disappear into the forest, running a sufficient distance away or ducking into a wormhole. Then he'll lose interest and go smashing things elsewhere. To be on the safe side, wear a bush hat during the next encounter.
Below is a table showing the number of hits required to kill the boss, using various weapons and ignoring weather conditions:
Weapon Number of hits
- Landing net, fishing rod 942
- Lucy's Axe 296
- Shovel, Pitchfork, Hammer, Cane, Willow's Lighter 224
- Axe, Pickaxe, Deluxe Axe, Deluxe Pickaxe, Boomerang 148
- Pickaxe 132
- Spear 118
- Mouse bat 96
- Meat bat 68-136
- Morgerstein 56 or 94
- Slime, Spiked Club 80
- War spear 78
- Thulecite Mace, Fanged Trap 68
- Shadow Sword 60
- Explosive Dart, Fire Dart, Fire Staff 40
- Powder 20
- Old bell 4
The Cyclops-Deer, now a Winter Giant, can freeze others, including the player. After two hits, the giant is guaranteed to freeze someone on the third. This makes some fighting tactics, such as pigs or hares, ineffective.
The boss can appear four times per season by default (days 0, 2, 8, and 10 for a single world). There's a chance he'll visit between the 28th and 30th days. Good luck, and don't starve!
