Solar Eclipse is a challenging gameplay event added in update 1.2. It can occur during the day after entering Hardmode and killing one of the mechanical bosses. Starting with update 1.3, the variety of monsters will increase depending on the bosses you kill.
- If the Goblin Army attacks during a Solar Eclipse, Solar Eclipse mobs will not spawn.
- The chance of appearing instead of a normal day is 4% (1:25).
- The chance of appearing on a normal day after a blood moon increases to 9.72% (7:72).
- The chance of a Solar Eclipse appearing is slightly increased when killing Hardmode bosses.
- You can start an eclipse yourself using a solar cooker.
- A solar eclipse can also occur immediately after the setting of a blood moon or pumpkin moon.
- An eclipse can begin simultaneously with other events that are not time-dependent, such as a slug storm, a goblin invasion, a pirate invasion, or Martian madness.
- A water candle and a battle potion increase the monster spawn rate even more. This is great for speeding up the acquisition of desired items.
- A solar eclipse lasts from sunrise to sunset, lasting one solar day (15 minutes). During this event, monsters exhibit extremely high movement speed and powerful attacks.
- In case of a solar eclipse, it's essential to have the most powerful weapons and armor at your disposal, as well as a well-fortified home, on hand. If you're unsure of your abilities, it's recommended to wait it out in a safe location, such as floating islands. A lava trap and/or dart trap are also recommended.
- If you are not in the line of sight of monsters, they will attack NPCs.
- Cyborg only sells Type IV missiles during the eclipse period.
- During an eclipse in the ocean (and possibly other biomes), the spawn rate of mobs increases by 2 times, just like during a blood moon.
- The remaining monsters in surface biomes disappear (except for the ocean) and do not appear until the eclipse ends.
- A solar eclipse is much darker than an ordinary night, but in real life it is quite the opposite.
- If you place a water candle during a blood moon and then a solar eclipse occurs, the duration of the eclipse increases (possibly a bug in version 1.2.1.1).
- Like the Pumpkin Moon, the Solar Eclipse can be seen in the main menu.
- On a sextant, the moon will appear as red as it does during a blood moon.
- You can wait out a solar eclipse in a dungeon or in hell, where it does not occur.
