Optical staff, thing?

Terraria Wiki → Optical staff, thing?

Pets are neutral characters; they do not interact with mobs. Minions fight alongside you against enemies. You can only have one pet at a time; summoning another removes the previous one. You can have up to eleven minions if all conditions are met (static minions, such as the Ice Hydra, are an exception).

Pets never stray far from their master, but minions can if they are distracted by a slime or another enemy (they may disappear from the player's line of sight).

Minions can only be summoned with staves, while pets can be summoned with any summoning item. Minions can break grass and pots, while pets ignore them. Baby

Slime Staff

Slime Staff (ID: 1309) is a living weapon summoned with the Baby Slime Staff, added in version 1.2. It appears as a small, smiling slime that accompanies the player and attacks their enemies. Initially, the player can only summon one slime. To increase the number of minions, the corresponding accessories and armor are required.

Slimes are classified as minions and are different from regular peaceful pets. While each new pet replaces the previous one when summoned, slimes, like all minions, can coexist with pets. The Slime Staff drops from Blue Slimes, Glowing Slimes, Toxic Slimes, Ice Slimes, Spiked Ice Slimes, Spiked Jungle Slimes, Queen Slimes, Susie Slimes, and Slime-Headed Zombies with a 0.01% (1 in 10,000) chance; it also drops from Pinkie Slimes with a 1% (1 in 100) chance.

The Imp Staff

Imp Staff (ID: 2365) is a summoning weapon added in version 1.2.4. It can be crafted on an anvil using Hellstone ingots. When used, it summons a fiery imp that will follow you and attack nearby enemies with numerous fireballs. The attack speed is very high. The imp's projectiles shatter upon impact with water. The imp also cannot fire while underwater, making it ineffective in water.

As with other similar staves, you can summon a maximum of 11 minions (requiring the Pygmy Necklace, Stardust Armor, Necromancer's Scroll, Papyrus Scarab, as well as the Enchanting Table and Summoning Potion buffs).

Recipe: 17 Hellstone Ingots + Anvil (Any) = Imp Staff

The Optic Staff

Optic Staff (ID: 2535) is a summoning weapon added in version 1.2.4. It summons miniature Spasmatism and Retinazer to assist you, especially in the second phase. Retinazer fires a laser at enemies, while Spasmatism rams enemies with extremely fast dashes, passing right through them.

With armor/accessories/potions that increase the minion cap, you can summon up to 22 twins (11 each), as two twins count as one summon. In this regard, the Optic Staff is superior to some later summoning items, as each twin deals damage based on the weapon's spec, meaning it must be multiplied by 2, while most other summoning staves don't have a base damage greater than 60. It's important to remember that each twin attacks separately, so enemy armor should also be multiplied by 2.

Sometimes Spasmatism gets stuck in blocks, especially due to dashes.

Sometimes, when using the Summoning Potion, two identical twins may remain after its effect wears off. (As of version 1.2.4.1).

When used, it summons a small pirate that will run or fly (if you're in the air) after you and attack nearby enemies.

Stardust Dragon Staff

Stardust Dragon Staff (ID: 3531) is a summoning weapon added in version 1.3.

Crafted with 18 Stardust Fragments on an Ancient Manipulator. Summons a Stardust Dragon that will follow you and attack nearby enemies. It can see enemies through walls and fly through them. If the player attempts to summon multiple dragons, the already summoned dragon will instead grow longer and therefore stronger. Although the Stardust Dragon's damage is lower than that of the Starcage, it is still the best minion due to its attack speed and ability to circle enemies.

If the player damages enemies with melee or ranged attacks, it also fires projectiles at the hit target. These projectiles travel ~10 blocks and disappear without hitting the enemy. Can attack in melee range.

As with other similar staves, you can summon a maximum of 11 minions (with the Pygmy Necklace, Stardust Armor, Necromancer's Scroll, Papyrus Scarab, and the buffs from the Enchanting Table and Summoning Potion).

Static Minions

These are minions that cannot move, so let's talk about them now! Staff of the Frost

Hydra

The Staff of the Frost Hydra is a summoning weapon added in version 1.2.

When used, it summons an ice hydra at the current cursor position. After a few seconds, it begins automatically shooting enemies. The hydra cannot move and despawns after exactly one minute. Although it does not attack players, it is a very powerful weapon in PVP, as damage is inflicted on a player when colliding with the hydra.

The staff can be found in ice chests in biomes. It has also been frequently found in wooden chests in dungeons (possibly a bug). There is also a bug that makes it impossible to use in the mobile version (mana will simply be wasted).

Stats

  • Damage: 100
  • Damage/sec: ~207
  • Speed: 29 (Very slow)
  • Attacks/sec: 2.1
  • Knockback: 7.5
  • Mana: 20
  • Rarity: Yellow

The Queen

Spider Staff is a summoning weapon added in version 1.2.4. It functions similarly to the Ice Hydra Staff. When used, it summons a Queen Spider at the cursor's location, after which she begins shooting spider eggs at nearby enemies. Upon impact, the eggs break, releasing numerous smaller spiderlings that also attack enemies. Upon impact with an enemy, the spiderling dies.

Recipe: 24 Spider Fangs + Anvil (Any) = Queen Spider Staff

Stats

  • Damage: 21
  • Damage/sec: ~43
  • Speed: 29 (Very slow)
  • Attacks/sec: 2.1
  • Knockback: 7.5 (Very strong)
  • Mana: 10
  • Rarity: Light red

Rainbow Crystal Staff

The Rainbow Crystal Staff is a summoning weapon added in update 1.3.

It drops from the Moon Lord with an 11.11% drop rate.

Summons a floating crystal that creates crystal "bombs" around enemies. The "bombs" explode after a second.

It has a range of up to 60 blocks. Due to the delay, it is not particularly effective against moving enemies, but is effective against crowds of stationary or moving enemies.

Stats

  • Damage: 150
  • Damage/sec: ~310
  • Speed: 29 (Average)
  • Attacks/sec: 2.1
  • Knockback: 7.5 (Very strong)
  • Mana: 10
  • Rarity: Red

Lunar Portal Staff

The Lunar Portal Staff is a summoner weapon added in version 1.3. It can be dropped by the Moon Lord (11.11%). It is used in the same way as the Ice Hydra Staff and the Spider Queen Staff, but does not require a block underneath it.

When used, it summons a portal at the cursor's position, which "cuts" through the area around the enemy with a beam of energy in a radius of up to 60 blocks. The beam pierces through enemies but does not penetrate blocks. The portal disappears after 2 minutes.

Stats

  • Damage: 50
  • Damage/sec: ~100
  • Speed: 30 (Average)
  • Attacks/sec: 2
  • Knockback: 7.5 (Very strong)
  • Mana: 10
  • Rarity: Red

Increased number of minions

  • Pygmy Necklace Minion Count +1
  • Necromancer Scroll: Minion Count +1, Minion Damage +10%
  • Papyrus Scarab Minion Count +1, Minion Damage +15%
  • Tiki Armor: Minion Damage +4, Minion Damage +30%
  • Bee Armor Number of Minions +2, Minion Damage +33%
  • Spider Armor Minion Count +3, Minion Damage +30%
  • Dread Armor Minion Count +3, Minion Damage +58%
  • Stardust Armor Minion Count +5, Minion Damage +66%
  • Summoning Potion: Minion count +1, Lasts 6 minutes
  • Enchantment Table: Minion Count +1, Lasts 10 minutes

Additionally

  • The Ice Hydra and Spider Queen cannot be placed on platforms or inclined blocks; they will spawn on the straight blocks below them. However, if dropped on inclined blocks, the Ice Hydra and Spider Queen will not fall through.
  • Stardust Armor adds its own minion as a set bonus.
  • With the Optical Staff, you can summon 22 minions, as a pair of eyes counts as one minion.
  • Each player can only summon one Star Dragon. Using the staff again will add a damaging segment to the existing dragon. Therefore, a dragon can have a maximum of 11 segments.
  • Since version 1.2.4.1, you can summon up to 9 minions.
  • Since version 1.3, the maximum number of minions can be increased to 11.
  • By summoning 9 minions at the same time, the player will receive an achievement.
  • Although the Mythical modification is the best for magic weapons, it makes more sense to upgrade to Ruthless. This modification has the highest damage bonus (+18%), and the other bonuses are either unimportant or not applicable to staves at all.
  • Static minions do not count towards minions, meaning they can be summoned along with other (regular) minions.
  • All melee minions have the same attack speed and knockback
